Allison M. Sepulveda, M.A. - Executive Director

AllisonMs. Sepulveda received her Bachelor of Science degree from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. as a Child Development Specialist and her Masters from California State University Northridge in Educational Psychology and Counseling. She has been working in the field of counseling, child abuse and domestic violence since 1994. Allison has experience as a social worker with Child Protective Services Deaf Unit and Five Acres In-Home Counseling - Deaf Program, in Los Angeles, CA.

In 2003 Ms. Sepulveda, started San Diego Deaf Mental Health Services (SDDMHS), a nonprofit mental health outpatient program that specializes in direct mental health services for deaf individuals and their family members. SDDMHS has been an on-site partner with the San Diego Family Justice Center since 2004.

In April of 2007, Ms. Sepulveda was awarded a Behavioral Health STARS Award by the San Diego Commission on Children Youth and Families for Child Abuse Prevention Month. In 2007 she was also nominated as a Public Health Champion for the County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency – Public Health Services. Ms. Sepulveda has served on the Executive Board of the San Diego Domestic Violence Council since 2007.

As the Executive Director of SDDMHS, Ms. Sepulveda has created a program that is culturally competent and linguistically accessible. SDDMHS has provided new mental health resources for the Deaf Community as well as education and training opportunities for deaf and hearing professionals.

Karen Wilson, M.S. - Assistant Director

KarenKaren Wilson received her Bachelor of Arts in Communications from University of California, San Diego, a Masters of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling for the Deaf at San Diego State University and a Certificate of Completion from the University of San Diego's Paralegal Training Program. 

Karen's past work experience consist of Counseling (Outpatient and Residential) for Drug and Alcohol Recovery Programs for the Deaf, Job Placement, Client Advocacy, Support Services to deaf and hard of hearing college students, Grantwriter and as a Paralegal providing legal assistance in cases involving Disability Law, Immigration Law, Family Law and Nonprofit Law.

Since 1993, Karen has been actively involved with the Deaf community as a Leader of various organizations and agencies, including Co-Founder and President of the San Diego Chapter of Deaf Women United, Co-Owner and President of Deafusion, and is currently serving her second term as the President of National Asian Deaf Congress (NADC).  Her special interests include the Asian Deaf Community, Leadership Training, Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Diversity and Racism.

Danielle Knack, LCSW - Clinical Director

Danielle KnackDanielle Knack obtained her BA in Psychology from UCSD and her Masters in Social Work from SDSU. While attending SDSU she also received her PPS credential in School Social Work. Danielle began her career working in the deaf community in 2003 while interning for her Masters program.

She has extensive experience working with diverse groups and in a variety of settings including academic, clinic, outpatient, and home visits. Danielle is skilled with managing life challenges and has successfully worked with parents, schools, and individuals.

She also has experience working in Crisis Houses, working with adults that have both mental health concerns and drug or alcohol addictions. In addition, she has collaborated with other professionals to provide Emergency Mental Health support when San Diego has been in need, as during the recent Firestorms.

Danielle provides individual, family, group psychotherapy, as well as school based services for children, adolescents, and adults.

Alicia Devine, Marriage and Family Therapy Intern

AliciaAlicia Devine obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from California State University, Northridge in 2001.  She went on to obtain her Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from San Diego State University in 2006.  Alicia also attended University of Redlands and received her PPS (school counseling) credential in 2007.

She has worked at The Center for Community Solutions and their shelters, Deaf Community Services, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and as a school counselor at California School for the Deaf, Riverside.  She has experience in working with families, children, and adults. She has seen clients in a variety of settings and situations. Her experience includes clients with a wide range of disabilities, cultural, religious, and ethnical backgrounds.  Alicia has also received training and certification in Baby Signs ®.

Alicia’s background includes a variety of positions including being a president for Alpha Sigma Theta, a Deaf CSUNians Vice President, as well as having received a Humanitarian award from National Center on Deafness at CSUN, and was recognized as Miss Congeniality from the Miss Deaf CSUNian pageant and Miss Siberian for Lambda Sigma Pi.   Alicia was a board member for Deaf Community Services and Deaf Domestic Violence Services of San Diego.  Her special interests are in the field of mental health for the Deaf/HH community, healthy relationships and families, and attempts at happy living for one and for all.
Alicia provides individual, couples, family therapy and counseling, as well as school based services for children, adolescents, and adults.

Jamie Gould - Volunteer Program Director

AllisonJamie Gould received her BA degree in Community and Environmental Planning (CEP) from University of Washington, Seattle and her MA degree in Spiritual Psychology from University of Santa Monica, Santa Monica, CA.

Since 1999, she has been actively involved in the Deaf Community as a coordinator, educator, advocate, administrative assistant, teacher, behavior specialist, counselor, training and continuing education coordinator with a concentration in providing services in the community and the general public in the domestic violence field. She works with individuals and groups in multi-cultural settings, both public and private. She has provided support in social skills and communication development to Deaf/HOH children.

Currently, she is a full time ASL Instructor at Grossmont College.

Alex Neofitidis - Program Specialist

DSC_0092bWas born and raised in San Diego, California. He has recently graduated from Altas-Charter School of San Diego with his High School Diploma. Before joining San Diego Deaf Mental Health Services (SDDMHS), he interned for San Diego County Mental Health Services as a Medical Records/ Data Entry Clerk. He has been working and actively involved in the Deaf Community since January 2009.

Alex is also very active in the 2009 Deaf Awareness Day Committee as Chair of the Teen Zone Committee.

 

His ultimate career goal is to become a Social Worker (L.C.S.W) for Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients by obtaining his Master of Social Work with an Emphasis in Deafness / Deaf Culture from Gallaudet University. He plans to work toward this goal by going to a local Community College for his Associates Degree (A.A.) in American Sign Language (ASL). After completing and obtaining his A.A. in ASL, he plans on applying with California State University, Northridge and major in Social Work and Deaf Studies. Upon completing his Bachelors of Social Work, he will apply to Gallaudet University’s Social Work Graduate Program.

 

Alex enjoys helping SDDMHS with special projects and events. Some of the task he performs at SDDMHS consists of Financial Eligibility Determination, Medical Records Keeping, and Billing.

Trisha Rama - Program Specialist

DSC_0091bTrisha Rama received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from University of California, San Diego. She obtained her certification of Event and Meeting Planning from San Diego State University, College of Extended Studies. She graduated from a local charter high school, The Preuss School UCSD, and from Vista Square Elementary school.

She plans to continue her education in the Rehabilitation field or pursue certification as a Therapist in Fall 2010. She wants to continue working for San Diego Deaf Mental Health Services and to assist with projects that focus on deaf teenagers and their interests. Her ultimate goal is to become a Counselor for deaf high school students.

Trisha spends her spare time reading many Biography and Classic books, loves to watch movies, and enjoys relaxing at home with her family. Trisha volunteers as a Patient Companion at Chula Vista Sharp Hospital. Among many of her interests, she actively enjoys participating in the Indian cultural community.
